7 Handy Household Solutions

As a result of the changes we've had to make in our day-to-day household routines, we've all learned to do without certain products or discovered that homemade remedies work nearly as well as expensive store-bought versions. Here are some online solutions you might want to try at home, but be sure to test them in an inconspicuous are first:

  • Mild Kitchen Cleaner (not for vulnerable stone surfaces like marble or granite): In a 14 oz bottle, combine water, white vinegar (5% acetate) and baking soda at an approximately 8/8/1 ratio.
  • Scrubbing Paste: Add 1 part baking soda to 3 parts water or mild dish soap.
  • Anti-stain Pre-wash Soak: To a gallon or 4 litres of hot water, add a cup of mild bleach, and/or a cup of powdered laundry soap.
  • Drain Cleaner: Pour 1/4 cup of baking soda, followed by 1/4 cup of white vinegar into drain to allow an effervescent action, then follow with boiling water.
  • Glass Cleaner: Combine 2 cups water, 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol (70% formula) in a spray applicator.
  • Brass Cleaner: Sprinkle salt on a lemon rind, then use it as a scrubbing pad.
Tips:
  • Add a few drops of essential oils, lemon rinds or a sprig of thyme to freshen homemade liquid solutions.
  • Never combine ammonia-based and bleach-based products.
  • Always label homemade mixtures.
